The Book Café
The Book Café at Ellis Guilford School and Sports College was set up to encourage reluctant readers in Year 7 to engage in reading, using the motivational power of fun reading-related activities.
Jon-Paul Pittman, one of the Nottingham Forest Reading Champions was privileged to be part of this launch. He answered questions from pupils, parents and staff about his love of reading.
Healthy start at the Study Centre
McDonalds are proud to be one of the sponsors of the Nottingham Forest Study Support Centre providing healthy fruit to kick start the pupils' sessions. Manning Girls School are the first Secondary School in Nottingham to gain the ‘Healthy Schools Gold Award'.
The pupils have designed healthy eating posters to be displayed in McDonalds. Nottingham Forest Academy player Kyle Collins was on hand to promote the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
Let's Kick Racism out of Football Campaign
The Study Support Centre was very excited to be involved in the ‘Let's Kick Racism out of Football campaign' again this year. To help raise awareness of the campaign pupils were involved in a variety of activities.
Manning girls held a Question and Answer session with Academy players Emile Sinclair and Patrece Liburd. Dovecote Primary pupils designed posters and Sneinton C of E pupils designed t-shirts.
Pupils from Fernwood Junior School were involved in a poetry workshop led by football poet, Crispin Thomas. Nottingham Forest Squad member Jon-Paul Pittman joined in the activities and pupils were delighted to receive ‘Kick it out' goody bags off him. Some of the poems are to be read out prior to the Forest V Bristol City match on Saturday 21 st October.
First Team Players Attend Study Support
First team players Julian Bennett and James Perch dropped into the Study Centre to see pupils from Dovecote Primary school and Sneinton C of E Primary School.
Pupils were working on the ‘Diary of a Football Fan' after attending the match against Swansea , in which they were given free tickets to the game for their hard work and good attendance.
Julian and James were on hand to support the pupils with the activity and commented on the Study Centre being a “fab place to learn!”
New Term September 2006
Pupils from Fernwood Junior, Sneinton C of E, Dovecote Primary and Manning Girls School will be attending for 8 weeks. They will be setting their own learning goals and will experience a variety of literacy, ICT and numeracy activities. The Secondary pupils will be undertaking tasks involving PowerPoint presentations, Cartoon Animation and Logo Design.

In partnership with McDonalds pupils attending the Nottingham Forest Study Support Centre will all be able to have fresh fruit prior to their sessions.

Big Lottery Summer School
Pupils from local schools enjoyed a week of fun and football at the Study Support Centre. Activities included cartoon film making, T-shirt design, computer activities and football competitions. The project was supported by the Big Lottery.
‘No Smoking' at the City Ground
Year 7 pupils from Top Valley School designed ‘No Smoking' posters, which will be displayed around the City Ground in preparation for the new season. The posters were judged by the players and Jon-Paul Pittman presented a Forest shirt to the winning pupil.
Nottingham Forest Study Support Centre Graduation
Pupils celebrated their time at the Study Support Centre with a graduation in the Robin Hood Suite. Guests were John Pelling; Nottingham Forest Finance Director, Lee Morgan; Key Stage 3 Manager at Top Valley School and first team squad members Felix Bastians, Jon-Paul Pittman and Vincent Fernandez.
Certificates of achievement and rewards were presented to pupils from; Glapton Primary, Whitegate Primary, Southglade Juniors, Edna G Olds Primary, Dunkirk Primary, Seagrave Primary, Melbury Primary, Greenfields, Riverside, Top Valley and Haywood Schools.
World Cup Project
This term pupils from Greenfeilds Community School , Riverside Primary, Haywood and Top Valley will cover literacy and numeracy activities based on the World Cup 2006. The work will culminate in a graduation on Wednesday 12 th July.
Players sent off the pitch and into the library
Local libraries joined forces with NFFC to inspire children to Kick into Reading .
Today's match sees the culmination of a very successful Kick into Reading project, developed by the National Literacy Trust.
Football in the Community, the Academy, 3 local libraries and over 600 school children were involved in the project, co-ordinated by the Study Support Centre. The academy players, community coaches, staff and librarians were trained by a professional story teller to create and perform stories and poems to bring story telling sessions alive.
Pupils were given the chance to come back with parents to the Club on 2 match days to enjoy more interactive stories in the luxury of the director's box! A fantastic time was had by all.
Nottingham Forest has developed a reading corner in the Meadows Library.

Kick Into Reading with Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest Study Support Centre is delighted to be involved with Kick into Reading , a National Literacy Trust and Reading the Game initiative. Through the Kick into Reading programme the centre is giving Nottingham City families and pupils the chance to enjoy reading and storytelling by providing parents and children with positive reading role models.
Forthcoming activity:
A professional storyteller will work with the Nottingham Forest in the Community department and the Academy players at the Study Centre on Tuesday 7 th and Wednesday 8 th March. There will then be 5 days of delivering stories to over 600 Key Stage 2 pupils in local libraries on Thursday 9 th , Tuesday 14 th , Wednesday 15 th , Thursday 16 th and Tuesday 21 st March.
Two ‘family days' will be held on Saturday 25 th March and Saturday 8 th April when 30 children plus parents, will be involved in a workshop session in the stands to provide tips and encouragement for family reading and storytelling. Families will be able to watch the match afterwards.
Three local libraries, The Meadows, Wilford and West Bridgford will be hosting the event and Nottingham Forest are providing reading areas within each. Nottingham Forest player Wes Morgan will promote the event in the Meadows Library on Wednesday 15 th March at 1.00 pm.
The schools participating in the project are Greenfields Community School , Welbeck Primary School , West Bridgford Junior School , Riverside Primary School and South Wilford Endowed CE Primary School.

World Book Day Celebration
On Thursday 2 nd March the Study Centre hosted the launch of 500 World Book Day balloons. The balloons were released on the pitch by first team player James Perch, who is the Study Centre's Reading Champion. He was helped by year 2 pupils from Greenfields Community School who were presented with a Nottingham Forest shirt and a goody bag.
The balloons carry a card which can be filled in and returned to win a £50 National book token.
World Book Day is the largest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK.
